7 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Machame Route

OVERVIEW

The 7-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to Uhuru Peak. This route offers a diverse trekking experience, with breathtaking views, rich landscapes, and excellent acclimatization due to its climb-high, sleep-low profile. Starting in the lush rainforest, the trail ascends through moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the icy summit. The 7-day itinerary allows for better altitude adjustment and increases summit success rates. Ideal for adventurous trekkers, Machame combines physical challenge with stunning natural beauty, making it a favorite among experienced and first-time climbers alike.

Detailed Itinerary

trek

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your trek begins at Machame Gate (1,800m), where you’ll complete registration before setting out through lush montane rainforest. The trail gradually ascends with occasional steep sections, surrounded by dense vegetation and birdlife. After approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking, you arrive at Machame Camp (3,000m), located just above the forest zone.

trek

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

After breakfast, the trail climbs steeply through moorland and heath, with expansive views as you ascend. As you leave the forest behind, the path opens up into grassy ridges and volcanic rock formations. You’ll reach Shira Camp (3,840m) by mid-afternoon, situated on the Shira Plateau with stunning views of Kibo Peak.

trek

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today is key for acclimatization as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,960m). The day includes a mix of gradual inclines and rocky terrain, helping your body adapt to the altitude. Barranco Camp is set beneath the impressive Barranco Wall and offers breathtaking sunset views.

trek

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, one of the most dramatic sections of the route. After reaching the top, the trail undulates through valleys and ridges with panoramic views. The trek to Karanga Camp (4,035m) is relatively short, allowing time to rest and continue acclimatizing.

trek

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

You’ll start with a steady climb over rocky terrain on your way to Barafu Camp (4,640m), your final base before the summit. As vegetation becomes sparse, the environment turns into alpine desert. You’ll arrive in the early afternoon, rest, and prepare for the summit attempt with an early dinner and sleep.

trek

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Around midnight, the summit attempt begins with a long and demanding climb through cold, dark conditions. You’ll reach Stella Point (5,739m) at sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking in the views, you’ll descend back to Barafu for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your final overnight stay.

trek

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

The last day is a descent through lush rainforest, with a noticeably warmer climate and thicker air. The trail can be slippery, but it’s a beautiful hike filled with the sounds of the forest. After reaching Mweka Gate (1,640m), you’ll sign out and receive your summit certificate, marking the successful end of your 7-day Machame Route climb.
