OVERVIEW

The 5-day Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route, often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only route offering hut accommodations, providing added comfort during your ascent. This popular trail features a gradual slope and well-defined path, making it a favorite for first-time climbers. Starting from the southeast, the route passes through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak. With experienced guides and scenic views, Marangu offers a classic and comfortable route to conquer Kilimanjaro.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Your adventure begins at Marangu Gate (1,870m), where you complete registration before starting the trek through lush rainforest. The trail is well-defined and offers chances to spot wildlife and rich vegetation. After a 4–5 hour hike, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut (2,700m) for your first night on the mountain.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, the trail ascends out of the rainforest and into open moorland. This day’s trek takes approximately 6–8 hours as you climb to Horombo Hut (3,720m). Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, and pass unique alpine vegetation.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

The trail gradually ascends through alpine desert, with sparse vegetation and dramatic mountain scenery. You’ll hike for 6–8 hours to reach Kibo Hut (4,700m), located at the base of the final summit climb. After an early dinner, you’ll rest in preparation for your midnight summit attempt.

Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Summit day begins around midnight. You’ll ascend steeply to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night. Total trekking time ranges from 12 to 16 hours.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Your final day takes you back through the moorland and rainforest zones as you descend to Marangu Gate (1,870m), a 5–7 hour trek. At the gate, you’ll receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to your mountain crew, concluding your incredible Kilimanjaro adventure.
